If you want to boot an intel mac the drive is supposed to be formatted with the GUID partition table, although it will boot an Apple Partition Map disk you won't be able to install OS X from the DVD onto it. There's nothing to stop you installing OS X on a GUID drive then cloning the installation to an APM drive (which you can then use to boot a PowerPC mac too).
