Had a new internal drive fitted and was attempting to install Mac OS Tiger and 
the message came up during installation from the DVD, "unable to install".

It was Mac OS Extended (Journaled) already so what do you mean by GUID?

Using Disk Utility to erase disk at the moment, says it will take 3 
Hours....gulp!
