Just to provide an update ... Brad at Apple very quick;ly sorted me out and it 
seems connected with some weird account to which the songs were registered. All 
is now well.

What concerns me though is why it happened. Songs that I'd been playing fine 
for 6 years suddenly became unplayable. The other thing I did that I didn't 
mention originally was that I'd loaded and played around with Aperture 3 Trial. 
This wiped all my photos synced to my iPod - because it changed library - and 
that may have some bearing ...
