Due to a total loss of display (which I'm hoping will turn out to be <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377>) I've had to migrate from one MacBook Pro to another.

All (well, most) went pretty smoothly. However, I then plugged in the external drive that I use for Time Machine, and got the message:

Would you like to reuse the backup
        "/Volumes/MyTMbackup/backups.backupdb/Foo" with this computer?

The backup was created on a different computer. If you reuse
this backup it can no longer be used by the original computer.

[Do Not Backup Now] [Create New Backup] [Reuse Backup]

I selected "Do Not Backup Now" and settled back to think about it.

Here's what I'd like to happen:

_TM adopts the backup, notices that most stuff on it is identical, and does an incremental. When I go into TM, I see the changes I've made on the new machine, and as I scroll back through time, I'm seeing what I had on the old machine. If I get my old MBP repaired and migrate back to it, I'll get the same dialog again, but will then find I have a TM backup that stretches back smoothly through the three incarnations._

Here's what I'm scared might happen:

_TM deletes the old backup and starts a new one. If I make some hideous mistake before it's managed to complete a new global backup, I'm screwed. Even assuming I don't do that, I lose the ability to go back to a file that I deleted or modified a month ago and only now realise that I need. Time will be restarted at today. History will be erased._

Has anyone else been in this situation - do you know what will happen if I use either "Create New Backup" or "Reuse Backup"?

The internal drive on my old machine was named "Foo". The internal drive on this machine is named "Bar". Would things be improved if I renamed it to "Foo" before venturing near TM again?

TIA for any advice,

Ben
