A crucial SSD would be SATA not IDE and so not compatible with a PowerBook G4.

why not buy one of those SSDs? It would speed up the laptop enormously and when you do get a new one, you can transfer the disk...

(yes, I'm still hoping to get one of these! donations to paypal welcome....*)

*you won't realise but there is a list-mum MUG list. They are currently arguing about whether executives should be paid/get expenses/blah. As usual, some people are urging that everyone do it a certain way (coincidentally, their way) and other people are getting pissed off and leaving the list.

NB please do NOT send anything to paypal. I mean it. I occasionally have to speak to UK MUG leadership and do chip in on the international list to defend our 'low maintenance no membership fees' status. Even a jokey quid to paypal might be cited by some officious person at some point...

I'll take a free palm-reading though if Sam has a minute...

That's not a bad idea although I am reluctant to spend any money on my faithful PowerBook as I must, at some stage, buy something more up to date. My idea was just to give this old warhorse a spring- clean so that I was not cluttered up with loads of useless stuff I never use. It's almost a way of sorting out my filing cabinet. I just wanted to reassure myself that I wasn't going to end up in some black hole with no up to date OS.
