I use rechargeable batteries in my new wireless mouse (latest version, whatever 
it's called). I find it works fine. The important thing is to use very good 
rechargeables. I bought mine in the US (powermax), together with a 
charger/reconditioner.

If you follow this strategy, you vastly increase your range of choices, because 
it seems that development nowadays is wireless.
