Have no fear, it is a wonderful device. I have had one for about a
month and am most impressed not only with the display but also the
speed.
I use it for work and play as I now carry most of my documents as
files on the iPad and at home to surf, email and watch films. I
obviously only went for a wifi model but there is a free app that will
let me send emails from the iPad via my phone when no wifi available,
good eh?
You will have to invest in a few apps (Office, Air files etc) for it
to be considered anything like a replacement for a laptop but
everything works so fast!

I have taken the plunge and ordered an iPad but now I am getting
cold feet. Has anyone already got one who can advise me? How
long does it take to download books? What choice of books are
available? When a book is loaded onto the iPad can you write notes
in the margins? What is it like to hold, feel, use? When I have
enquired at Apple shop they tell me iPads are not yet on display.
Can it be used like a laptop? ie when I go on holiday do I need to
take laptop as well as iPad?
