HI Ranulph

Virgin Media's SMTP server, smtp.ntlworld.com, will only accept email without
authentication and only on port 25. Functionally this means that you can only
send when you're connected to Virgin Media's broadband network so that they
know who you are when you send email through them.

MobileMe accepts authenticated mail on port 465 (default for encrypted mail
using SSL) or port 587 (unencrypted but must be authenticated or the server
will hang up) so you can send from anywhere but only if your return address is
[email protected], massively annoying for anyone using MobileMe to share email
from a personal domain name with another computer or user.

It's always a problem finding a solution that works everywhere. If you've got a
hosted domain name, the host should provide you with an authenticated SMTP
server, unless if they're fasthosts who are utterly useless and horribly
expensive. Once you get that set up you'll then find that occasionally BT block
your connection using spamhaus, just for their own amusement. This is fixed
with a command added to the postfix configuration line of whatever you're
sending through, which the host can do easily.
