The fact that Apple is running this free case program and that peoples' experiences vary so wildly makes me nervous (I haven't upgraded the OS on my iPhone or iPad yet either for the same reason). Fortunately, my contract has a year to run and by then this will all be handsets under the bridge.
If you don't have to upgrade just yet, I'd be tempted to wait a while. Just my two pennerth.
