It mounts on the desktop fine, and Disk Utility happily verifies the iPod's disk to be in perfection condition. iTunes just won't sync the thing!
I'm loathe to let it die because my wife loves it and it's also fully compatible with our iPod Hifi which newer iPods are not (they won't take charge from it).
