A couple of weeks ago, I applied an Apple software update that needed
a reboot. On the reboot, the screen went white (as normal) but no Apple
logo and spinning wheel appeared. After around a minute, there was a
folder icon in the middle of the screen and a flashing question-mark on
it. A few Net searches, via another computer, indicated that the drive
might be at fault. So, out came the DiskWarrior DVD. It didn't find
anything important but I told it to replace the directory. My Mac Pro
then rebooted and has been running without a problem for the next two weeks.
I needed to reboot it earlier this evening. I shut everything down
orderly and then selected 'Restart'. I got the same as last time - the
folder with the question-mark on it. Another run of the DiskWarrior DVD
and there was just one 'text encoding' repair of a PDF in an iDVD
folder. Again, I allowed DW to replace the directory and the computer
booted up perfectly. Once this was done, Apple Software Update suggested
a security update and a Safari update to 5.0.2. I let it do these and
reboot itself. The updates went in ok but, on reboot, there is the
folder and question-mark again.
Once again, I used DW and it found nothing wrong. Again, I let it
rewrite the directory. The Mac Pro rebooted and is running perfectly
again, and I'm writing this message to SMUG on it.
Any ideas anyone? Is the drive on its way out and perhaps I should
replace it just in case? Or does anyone suggest anything else?
Thanks, Graham
