In the end the CalDAV route seems to have worked, though I'm not sure
why. They key seemed to be activating it on the iPhone and then going
to m.google.synch with a browser and turning the other calendars on.
It also solved the two way synch issue. Works great. Now if only the
Calendar app on the iPhone had a week view and supported Google Tasks!
