I've upgraded iMac memory and always found it a painless straight forward procedure, as you don't have to open up the whole thing - theres just a little flap on the bottom of the screen that you open. As for anti static precautions common sense measures should be fine. Don't take the ram module out of it's anti-static bag until you are ready to install it. Don't wear a thick woolly jumper or entertain kids by sticking balloons to the ceiling while you are performing the upgrade. That sort of thing really.
Seriously though, if you have a room without carpet in, then do it in there... If you don't then its no big issue really. Touch a metal tap or something before you begin the job and keep dogs/cats away from the work area.
