it happened again but this time I managed to solve it. The tip about
looking in the audio midi set-up was in fact hte right one (I got dizzy
the firs time). I had simply lost a channel. I think Dragon Dictate
(formerly Macspeech Dictate) is the culprit. But that was a lot quicker
than reinstalling it (which I now realise probably didn't solve it the
first time)
