For write-lock reading can you use a sacrificial macbook air? They can run windows and linux after all...
I used to have a weibe-tech sata to FW800 adapter, and it was incredibly sturdy. It got used a lot and never had a problem with it. They also do a line of forensic adapters which I imagine are very good build quality based on my drive dock experience Toby.
