Personally I don't do any maintenance to my Macs and they run fine. 
Occasionally I start in single user mode and run : 

fsck -fy

then :

reboot

Better ways to speed up your Mac include : 

max out the ram
buy a 7200rpm hard drive or preferably an SSD drive
upgrade to snow leopard
remove Rapport, the useless security software form HSBC's "security partner"
