Shift 3 is indeed the pound sign but the dollar is key 4 it's the # key that is 
the 3 button  to print # (option 3)  Just for your info, (option 4) is ¢.  
Actually it is very useful having all 3 currency options available on a 
keyboard!

Thanks for the clarification Sam  and thanks to Nicklas too, for his stab at my 
problem.  Problem now solved!
