Would it be called "defaults": there's nothing called preferences.
You may remember I'm running from an external (backup) disc which I'm using as my startup system disc. This disc has InDesign on it, but no preferences or defaults. The resident disc in the machine, not being used as the system or startup, also has a copy of InDesign on it. There is a default file on this disc. I think this one default file is the only one being used (I can't find one on the external disc). I was using the copy of InDesign on the external disc, and that is the one that won't launch. The one on the internal disc will launch, however. But, when I switch application copy from external to internal version (or back again), there is a a pause while the preferences are rebuilt (sorry, I don't remember the exact wording and, having got an application working, I'm reluctant to risk another change!). This is a terrible fix, and will only work for the moment. Just a patch up (a bodge, even). I still need to be able to fix the copy on the external disc.
