Finding firm information from apple will probably be near impossible, but my
instinct is that most generic usb2 pci cards will probably work just fine. If
any source is going to have reliable information on compatibility it's the
hackintosh scene... If they have reports on particular brands/chipsets to
avoid then follow suit. If there's no information either way then try the
cheapest card you can find and hopefully you won't lose too much cash if it
doesn't work.

when I was in the Apple store yesterday not buying an iPad (hey, I was passing by) I asked someone who sent me to the 'guy who knows' who looked at me incredulously when I asked about PCI cards for a Mac Pro. I explained what they were. He had never heard of them. He wanted to send me to a genius to see if they have any ("but they're definitely not on the shop floor") but we both agreed it would be better to do it when the entire population of London was not there.

I pointed at one queue and asked if it was THE queue. He said 'no, that's just the queue for iPhones' (it reached virtually to the door of the Regent St branch)

Interesting how much times have changed. A few years ago someone selling Apple kit's eyes would have lit up at meeting a 'power user'...!
