I have now found out how to sort this out : in case other Smuggers have this
problem, this is what I have discovered (partly thanks to an Apple
discussion forum) :  Click on Calendars at top on left.  Under show all
calendars, make sure @me.com email address is ticked and not 'All from my
mac'.  This is what causes the duplicates.   In contacts, [email protected] should
be at top of address list on left. But having done this, and cleared up
duplicates, I still haven't discovered why, on my laptop MacBook Pro, in
address book preferences, the only account listed is 'On my Mac" with
synchronise with Mobile Me ticked.  If I try to add [email protected] it won't
accept it.  But still things are synchonising OK between lapbook and iPad.
