it's pretty easy if you can get TM to use the disk. I seem to remember
having trouble.
BUT --
a) it will not be swappable with direct connection because it uses a
different storgae system (sparse disk image instead of folders). If you
start it as remote, it must stay remote
b) depending on speed of network, incredibly slow. If you're wireless,
recommend you start with an ethernet cable to get the first back-up done.
