Another +1 for vlc. It is very versatile and all it's codecs live inside it 
nicely self contained. An alternative is a plugin called perian which will 
allow you to play many more types of video inside QuickTime player. This may be 
an advantage if you want to convert videos to other formats or play all your 
files via iTunes or frontrow. 

None of these programs will improve the quality of playback though, it pretty 
much plays or it doesn't. The only reason to install the official divx player 
is if you have protected purchased content that needs a licence to play back.
