There's a new word processor in town called Bean, it's in beta testing
at the moment so is currently free (no idea if it'll be paid-for when
finished). I downloaded a copy and had a play, certainly seems to beat
the lumbering oaf that is MS Word.
a good heads-up for non-power-users but as someone who has tried many
many WP/similar, I get a yawn;)
At least in my world (academic/admin), these are each killer factors:
No footnotes.
No attempt to deal with the graphics issue of RTF. Try a document with a
header when others are using Word.
Track Changes...that's the real killer.
To be frank, I'm not sure what separates this from Mellel, Nisus,
MarinerWrite (with all respect to Sam's judgement)... They start looking
clean and easy to use, then they all end up being a bit arcane in just
the same way that Word did (anyone else remember Word 5.1? Fantastic
programme).
I am constantly forced to use the WordMonster by work for Track Changes
but when I get the luxury of writing my own stuff, nothing beats
LaTex... there's a steep initial learning curve, then you're away...
I was helping my girlfriend with a two-page Word document yesterday. We
spent longer working out why it randomly reformatted stuff than actually
working on it.
But everything seems to be done collaboratively in my world which means
Word grrrrr
