Best thing is just to upgrade the hard drive in your Mac, then you don't need to worry about deleting files. You have to think what would happen if your backup drive were to fail and you'd deleted all those files off your hard drive.
If you've got a 2011 iMac, you're stuffed anyway as you can't upgrade with your own hard drive, it has to be an Apple drive even if you're out of warranty. I'm really miffed about that one!
