Try using DaisyDisk

http://www.daisydiskapp.com/

This will scan your hard disk for all files, hidden or not and will
display them so you can see what is taking up what.
When I bought my ssd and put it in, found it was full almost straight
away. Using this found my laptop had stored over 100GB + in
the .trashes folder (hidden on my comp) even though the trash was
supposedly empty. After getting rid of this all was good again.
