Mostly I think you are spot on in your admin, but in this instance I think you
are wrong. Why not let this thread run its natural course? Then every one who

cannot believe this would put people off the group.

If you wish to set up a forum or FB page or similar, I've already said that would be fine (it would be none of my business). Being a moderator (or similar) involves judgment calls. I took the role on because a) I wanted to contribute to a group that had been very welcoming and helpful b) my expertise was rarely needed because of the number of people who know more than I do c) I know what I'm doing. And in this case, it ran a while and usually 24-48 hours is the point where people start thinking 'this is OT, why am I getting this stuff?' so I nudged it. Probably most people who wanted to contribute already had but as I said, it's a judgement call. Also some people are inclined to feel they 'should' participate when they'd rather not. The brief of the group is mutual support using Macs and I've seen this kind of thing be the first step in a list becoming very runny as to what is OT and what isn't.

It doesn't mean I'm always right. But the real-life issue is that groups *do* need moderators and that it's just like being a goalie in football: long boring bits then suddent activity where few people think you did the right thing.

I would normally say let's take this off-list but what with one thing and another (doing 2.5 jobs and most recently having my kitchen destroyed by flooding) I'm not really in a position to answer at any length. My position is that I'm happy to be moderator until the group wants someone else to. In fact, I have been thinking recently that with my workload I am insane to be doing *anything* beyond raw essentials so if someone else wants to come and do their stint, I'd be more than happy to hand the reins over.

This is NOT remotely bad-tempered or confrontational, please read it as it's written -- perfectly calmly, some shrugging, and a genuine openness to a shift-change (or to carry on). But not really a debate about the rigths and wrongs and details of list moderation. I moderate the list as my judgement tells me. I'm not interested in being a moderator who is trying to guess what others want because it's straight to "you can't please everyone" (which is where you started anyway).

However, shutting down discussion is obviously a bit hypocritical so I'm happy if you wish to set up a poll and post it here about whether people would like a sustained thread swapping photos and bios and the like (but I do point out this can all be done via your google profile, though you may not wish to use it). Obviously I'll abide by a majority decision unless it's only a small fraction of membership.

I do ask that if you wish to go down this route, we go straight to that rather than discussing it at great length...
