Sam,

Thank you very much for going to such lengths to give us a clear explanation of
how to use DropBox. I really appreciate it.

DropBox is probably the most simple of all the file sharing/syncing tools. The
way I understand it you have three levels of files :

Files in the DropBox folder : only you can see these on any devices you've
installed DropBox using the same account.
Files in Shared folders within the DropBox folder : only you and the other
members of the shared folder (must be DropBox users) can see these. The other
people cannot see files from number 1.
Files in the Public folder : anyone (even without a DropBox account) can see
files in here but only with a link you send them. There's no way to browse
someone's public folder
Images in the Photos folder : same as the public folder but you send people a
link to the folder not the file, then they will see a lovely web gallery of all
the images in that folder

Inside the Public/Photos folder is a text file explaining how to send someone a
link but involves copying & pasting a link into an email to allow someone to
download your file/view your images.

Shared folders are managed on the website www.dropbox.com where you can also
undelete any files accidentally thrown away.

The key thing about DropBox is that 99% of it is done in folders on your
computer, with the software running silently in the background synchronising
your files. With other services such as sendbigfile or yousendit, you have to
use an application to send the file, rather than simply placing it in the
correct folder.

I use shared folders when I'm developing websites for my clients; I simply
invite them to a shared folder then instead of emailing me over 100MB of jpgs
(it has happened) and wondering why they were all refused by my lovely MacMini
Server, they simply put the images into the shared folder on their computer and
they magically arrive on mine!

All that for free (2GB) and an option to gain more space by referring people,
I'm up to 10GB in total.

Regards

Sam
