Hi Russell My laptop is currently backing up 50GB after a lion install, not sure where all the changed files came from either. Backup Loupe can show you what's been backed up but only after the backup has finished. http://soma-zone.com/BackupLoupe/
When you switch the iMac on, go through the normal migration assistant with one time machine backup, then once you're logged in open Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant > Migrate from Time Machine backup while your second Time Machine backup drive is connected. Any duplicated folders get renamed with (from old Mac) on the end of them.
