Well, a google search showed me that this has happened to a few people. Holding power and home buttons for about 20 seconds got rid of the spinning cog. But a blank screen.... holding the power button down again got the apple logo, which eventually turned into the "slide to unlock". Which I did - and got the spinning cog again, briefly - then a blank screen. It took a few times of pressing the power button to get to the home screen - but it is up and running again.
