I think the idea is to get people using the App store more for their
software purchases.  Considerable advantages for Apple in that.  To a lesser
extent, we consumers benefit too.

Many apps are cheaper, Pixelmator for example.  I think developers have to
pay Apple 30% of the cost but of course Apple then bears the "risk" of
providing the infrastructure to allow the App store to exist.
