I watched the 1984 Superbowl on US TV but missed the 'ad' as I was in the
toilet at the time and didn't know what the fuss was about. Two or three years
later a small software house I used to help introduce online systems at the
large UK financial services company I then worked at did all their development
on the original Macintoshes in a network and I was hooked.

In 1987 I was at a conference in Bournemouth where all the stage proceedings
involved the use of Macs when I first saw the Knowledge Navigator video - the
precursor to what is only now being realised. Plus a short video from Jobs,
now NeXT, extolling the idea that anything is possible with computers and
showing off the NeXT OS. The guy sitting next to me remarked 'why would you
want to clutter up your screen like that?'. As I look now at my 'cluttered'
desktop it seems so obvious.

Many are quoting from Job's Stanford U speech as a shorthand way of extolling
his life philosophy. But for me I'd already understood that Steve Jobs was
about challenging preconceptions and that stuck with me ever since. Not always
comfortable - doesn't win friends too often, but he had the drive to get others
who were close up and personal to give it a go. And we're glad they had.

I hope that Apple continues to challenge the status quo and get up close to
persuade us all to keep at it. Lion is but a step in the journey. If you step
back you may find it near impossible to think different.

I'll certainly remember Steve.

Regards,

Tony
