Unfortunately yes, although you could just as easily sync your contacts & calendars using your gmail account.
In Address Book on your Mac, you can set up gmail contacts syncing. Then on the iPhone you can set your gmail account up as an Exchange ActiveSync account, which will sync Contacts & Calendars. You can also set up iCal to sync with your gmail calendar on your Mac.
