My Aunt has found a nasty little problem with OS10.5

years ago she purchased a eMac which is loaded with OS10.5 and has been
browsing and using iPhoto without issue ever since. I got a call for help via
last week from my father who explained that for the past year she's been
writing her life story and had apparently 'lost' the file. Auntie is more
comfortable with a washing machine than a computer which is perhaps why she has
got into this pickle.

He's what I have worked out has happened; she was accessing the Appleworks file
'My story.cwk' via an alias. I have tracked the alias back and it was accessing
the master file here;

/Users/setup/.Trash/My story.cwk

I was staggered. How could she have been editing this file whilst it was in the
trash? To test this I took one of her other documents for which I could see an
alias and placed the master doc in her waste bin and sure enough it let me
carry on editing. As I understand it my Aunt got to a point in November with
her story that upset her, so took a break and only now felt up to carrying on.
My guess is that the trash was emptied at some point between then and now and
so the file was flushed and the alias stopped working. Of course with the
master file in the trash Time Machine is of no help.

Just in case the deleted file might still intact I brought her eMac home and
started it in Firewire Target mode and have run a file recovery application
'Nice to Recover Data for Mac' which didn't find anything. I am now scanning
again with Remo Recovery (the free version just to see if it can find anything
before I shell out for a serial number).

Aside from the warning to take care if you are running OSX 10.5 I'm wondering
if there is anything else I can do? The word 'Kilwinning' was in the file so is
there any way I can use that to search?

Regards
