I would move to 10.7 and see the performance improvements. Make sure you make a clean install. I'm sure you'll be satisfied with the snappiness of a fresh install. And give it a go a few months and if it doesn't work, then you can get a new machine and it is more likely it will be around the time when Apple comes up with 10.8 and updated Macbooks.
