Dear Smuggers
I've had a few years administering SMUG now (with some mistakes and one
or two explosions, but the building is still standing).
The difficulty is that my workload these days is extraordinarily high,
and shows no sign of abating. Most of it is email. I feel like a
call-centre, spending about 12 hours a day, every day, replying to
emails and doing admin-type tasks. Unless I'm doing other things, which
just defers the email joy.
The reality has been for some time now that even if I finish work in
time to look at SMUG matters, absolutely the last thing I can face is
reading emails and doing admin tasks (like troubleshooting someone not
receiving email, checking that new members are not spammers etc).
So I think it's time to put on the table that it's time for a successor.
I'm happy to help with a transition process.
All you need is:
1) To learn from my mistakes (principally, that you are no longer an
'ordinary member of the group' and cannot afford to join in when it gets
fractious, as some of you will remember).
2) to be happy to do a few checks on new members and keep an eye on
things getting out of hand.
3) to have the nerve to call a halt to things just as they are starting
to get fun (sorry, but it's often the way: just as people are getting
excited/really enjoying themselves, the rest of the list is getting
tired of the increasingly OT and excitable thread, and quietly leave).
Think it over. I'll try to keep up with the conversation;)
