Hi Ranulph

I'd boot into the Recovery partition (if you're on lion) and run Disk Utility 
on your hard drive. If that doesn't work, open Terminal and type : 

sudo rm -fr 

Then drag the offending folder into the Terminal window and it should fill in 
the path, push return and type your password in, the folder should be deleted.
