I would first advise upgrading to 10.6 and ideally 10.7 on that MacBook, Mail under 10.5.8 had a few instabilities.
Sounds like the mailbox needs rebuilding, select the mailbox then go to the Mailbox menu > Rebuild. I'd make sure you have a full backup of your mail directory first though!
