Sam, that link is the Oracle Instant Client, and I've had years of experience with that. Very simple, unzip the components you require, set ORACLE_HOME, PATH and TNS_ADMIN and your up and running.
The version I now need is the 'full client', the most useful link is http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/10204macsoft-098015.html but the documentation doesn't match the download so after about 2 weeks I thought I'ld try the mailing list.
