Here's the unavoidable fact of email lists:

1) 50% of the list find OT stuff valuable
2) 50% of the list hate OT stuff.

So for an admin it's not about banning all OT stuff. It's about stopping it gaining momentum. That means group 2 don't get wound up (which is reasonable). Lists that permit too much OT become insanely chaotic (I've seen it) and lists that are too strict become terrifying (try posting a newbie message to the Apple scripters list).

What I've seen work is that a quiet word is had with repeat offenders and that threads get shut down before they get carried away.

So this one ran its course. Let's leave it.

In future, I can see a case that this list is (nominally, perhaps!) heavy on Brighton users and there was therefore some judgement involved in posting the original message. What would be better would be a one-liner with a link, perhaps.

The one thing that *never works* is the list debating it and arguing (see my opening). I've seen it too often!

I'm sorry I continue to be too busy to monitor as I'd like (or even finish a handover!) but you're a very good-natured list (seriously) so let's leave it at that.

Have a nice weekend...;) I'm about to have a holiday so if something flares up, *let it die down*.

Ray, it's your call. I'm not asking you to leave. But if you decide to, you'll have to figure out the unsubscribe method yourself;)
