Thank you, Sam. 

Disk utility's verify/repair claims there is nothing wrong. I tried three 
experiments. Producing a disk image with disk utility gives me a locked disk I 
cannot open. Carbon Copy Cloner found errors and produced only a partial copy.

As I have a back-up copy I'll erase the disk and restart Time machine.
