Thunderbolt isn't a networking technology, more of an extension to the PCIe 
system for expanding your computer, but funnelled through a cable rather than 
cards that slot into the motherboard.

You'd be better off just sharing the time machine backup drive from the iMac 
(connected via thunderbolt if possible), then use either a fast wireless 
network or wired ethernet to share it out.
