It was probably mail syncing with folder on the yahoo server, perhaps it thought it needed to sync the entire inbox then found it up to date after only a few.
If you had 4000 unread emails appear in your inbox then there might be something to look at. But if nothing new arrived then I wouldn't worry about it too much.
