Just for closure... I've found one can either use Sam's Cmd i method, or 
Cmd E to edit, make the changes, Cmd E to save them, and SPACE BAR to make 
the modal window vanish!

Discovered in complete error, when I dropped my book on the space bar.

Perfick!

Now works as it should - having used odd combinations of Esc in Lion, after 
they tweaked the SLeopard system!

Always on our toes with Apple!
