Have a look at the weekly Tidbits.com newsletter which came out yesterday
morning - there is an in depth article in it about excessive data use on
iPhones and how to find out what is using it and how to minimise the data
use. Sounds like what you are asking.

> Subject: [sussex_mug] iPhone data max out
>
> Hello.

> Since upgrading to an iPhone 4S in February with O2 I have been absolutely
> caning the 1GB data allowance I get every month as part of the tariff.
> Previously this had never been an issue and I have not changed any of my
> mobile internet/data use behaviour since. At first I thought this was the
> delight of using iCloud that I was paying for. However, it appears, according
> to the O2 customer service bod I just spoke to, that the bulk of my data
> allowance is being consumed by some sort of update that occurs at midnight.
> This update consumes anywhere between 100-200 Mb at a time. The problem is
> that I don't know how I discover what app is responsible for this usage. Has
> anyone had this problem before and if so what did you do to knock it on the
> head? The O2 customer service bod suggested I upgrade to the latest version
> of iOS. Currently I am using 5.1.1 but am loath to update it to 6 given its
> widely reported problems. Additionally I don't know to what effect this will
> actually remedy the problem. Ideally I would like to isolate the app or

> Thanks.
