Hi Ben

The freezing sounds like it could be a bad block on the drive yes. You could 
replace it with a seagate barracuda 2TB drive for around £80, with some later 
iMacs you have to download a program called HD Fan Control which supplies the 
drive temperature to the system and controls the fans accordingly.
