I replace smashed iPhone 4 screens all the time and it's generally an easy job, 
just be careful with making sure each screw goes back in the right place.

The home button itself is actually just a bit of plastic which pushes down onto 
a hardware button that's underneath the front screen. It could either be liquid 
residue making the plastic button stick, or the hardware button itself needing 
replacement.
