>From the laptop clicking the wifi icon and choosing "Create Network" even cheaper still, because its free and built in to osx. Windows can do it too but its called something else like network sharing wizard. Impromptu laptop wifi creation is never as straight forward as it should be, so a portable wifi device will almost certainly be easier to use.
