Hi Jonathan

You have three choices : 

Mac OS Extended : Read/Write on Mac, Read/Write on PC with MacDrive software
FAT32 (also called MS-DOS in DIsk Utility) : R/W on Mac, R/W on PC, no single 
file greater than 4GB
NTFS : R/W on Mac with open source software NTFS-3G, R/W on PC natively

If you're going to be using the drive with your Mac primarily, I'd format Mac 
OS Extended, then download a trial of MacDrive on your PC laptop.
