As you have the camera, for real simplicity you could fire up Quicktime Player (V10) on the Mac, sit yourself down, choose File > New Movie Recording and then press the red button and do your thang.
When you're done QT does allow rudimentary editing using Edit > Trim ... or there's iMove for fancier stuff.
