Seems that method of getting the UID only works in Mountain Lion.
Anyway, I got it from Terminal and the 'id' command. As I thought, UID
502 is me (my normal logon).

XPC Is the XProtect anti-malware service from Apple, difficult to say
why it would be crashing though. Sounds like the xpc server can't
authenticate the user with ID 502. Try system preferences > Users >
right click each user > advanced > which one has the ID 502?

Hi Sam
Found it and 'force quit' the process. It restarted itself with a new
PID number. However, no change. No SHARED heading in the Finder
sidebar and no computers listed for sharing.
I'm not certain, but its possible this has only been happening since
late on 15 Aug when the computer ran really slowly and Finder
eventually locked up. The console was filling with 100s of messages
like the ones below. I had to force the Mac Pro off and then restart
it. A Google search indicates this seems to be something to do with an
opendirectoryd bug and may be unconnected to the problem I have now.
Everything else seems fine..

We have three computers on our network ... Mac Pro (Lion), iMac
(Lion), MacBookAir (Mountain Lion)
In System Preferences, Sharing ... all have File Sharing switched on.
On the iMac, in Finder, you can see see the other 2 computers in the
Sidebar (under SHARED).
On the MacBook Air, you can also see the other 2 computers.
On the Mac Pro, neither of the other computers appears and neither
does the SHARED heading.
In the Mac Pro Finder Preferences (Sidebar) all the 'shared' options
are ticked.
On the Mac Pro it was always possible to see the other two computers
until sometime in the last few days.
Anyone got any ideas what's gone wrong and/or what can fix this?
Thanks, Graham
